Swansea City v Coventry City : Matchday Thread AFTERMATH 18:08 - Mar 2 with 10414 viewsNotLoyal

It’s the big game of the day in Swansea that’s for sure. Many other championship clubs will also be playing big games as well. In their own towns at least. Mark Robins who once played with Bobby Charlton’s old team wants to go to the premier league. He is making a good go of it. Better than Batman who he also played with.

Coventry City are on a mission for play off points at Swansea 3rd Mar 2022 09:00
Saturdays Championship battle between Swansea City and Coventry City see’s two sides in similar form. Both have won three out of their last five games, Coventry losing once and the swans losing twice. Coventry visit SA1 in tenth place with a superior goals scored and goals conceded record this season, plus they are ten points ahead of their rivals. 0

Nathanael Getting Ogbeta 3rd Mar 2022 15:59
See what we did there ? New swans signing Nathanael Ogbeta is back in light training after five weeks of disappointment rehabilitating from a hamstring pull. After ten minutes of his first Swansea training session he broke down and hasn’t been able to join in any physical team activity. However, the added value for Nathanael has been gaining an understanding of the Russell Martin way when it comes to training his Swansea players, both mentally and physically. 0

The key factors to a successful Swansea City Saturday 5th Mar 2022 07:21
Today’s game against Coventry City is a winnable proposition for Russell Martin’s side. Yes there has to be that click that we all saw last Monday night at the Hawthorns, and it most certainly comes down to numerous key Swansea components coming together. And by that we mean the positivity of certain players to bring about attacking football. 0

Russell Martin demands the same again from Swansea City 5th Mar 2022 13:00
This afternoons game from the swansea.com stadium has become something of a defining moment for Russell Martin this week. Not only does he want to see another top performance at home, after three months of poor form it will show clearly his ability to turn around and get his team going again. 0

Swansea City: Andy Fisher; Ben Cabango, Kyle Naughton, Ryan Manning; Flynn Downes, Matt Grimes (captain), Korey Smith, Cyrus Christie; Joel Piroe, Jamie Paterson; Michael Obafemi.

Substitutes: Ben Hamer, Jay Fulton, Olivier Ntcham, Kyle Joseph, Joel Latibeaudiere, Finley Burns, Cameron Congreve.

Coventry City: Simon Moore, Jake Clarke-Salter, Michael Rose, Kyle McFadzean (captain), Jamie Allen, Ben Sheaf, Viktor Gyokeres, Ian Maatsen, Todd Kane, Jake Bidwell, Gustavo Hamer.

Substitutes: Ben Wilson, Jodi Jones, Martyn Waghorn, Josh Reid, Matty Godden, Fabio Tavares, Ryan Howley.

Obafemi ‘Scores some goals for Swansea’ in another three goal home win 5th Mar 2022 17:30
Swansea City again turned on the style to make it five goals in two games with Michael Obafemi shining in front of goal yet again. Okay, let’s make it sound better, that’s eight goals in three games for the swans. We have to put that Sheffield United game to the back of our minds. To see Swansea dominate a first half so calmly and to score two goals from well created chances will please supporters of the Jacks. Coventry haven’t won in Swansea since 1960, and that trend has continued. 0

The first goal we got in between the lines to be able to get in behind with short sharp passes.

The second one was created by the ball playing keeper that Martin wanted.

The 3rd one was just a through ball onto a willing runner but the main thing was Grimes had faced up to Coventrys goal in an attacking area BUT the space was there for Obefami to run into.

None of the goals had anything to do with change in style, arguably the first 2 were down to how Martin wants his team to play.

There has definitely been a tweak - that’s undeniable.

That's because if a team is willing to go direct and long then you can't commit to the press too aggressively.

The change is obvious, not sure why people are so keen to deny it.

but you cannot argue with facts ....
first goal came from neat quick triangles moving fowarwards

second goal..long ball out from Fisher then 2touches from Downes before Obafemi put it away and the third a slide rule pass from Grimes into space for Obafemi to run onto and put away.
previously Grimes would have turned and passed it back or sideways.....there is a shift in tactics and playing style

Correct.

This way of playing isn't even in the same realm, and anyone pretending it's the same is doing so for other reasons than honest appraisal.

It is absolutely a sacrificing of passing numbers and possession in place of direct football. ''Breaking the lines'' is exactly what we said they should be doing, with direct and quick passing, not aimless keep ball.

I'm never quite sure if people simply cannot read a game, or whether they are just not wanting to cede territory to those who called it right early. Not that any territory or admissions that they got it wrong is required of course, just a bit of honesty in discussions going forward would do.

I will work out the stats soon which shows the binary splice between the two approaches.

My point is, is this the way RM wanted to play from day 1, but has been unable due to the oppositions high and energetic press, something Coventry didn't do. Let's not forget Coventry could have had at least 3 or 4 goals, mainly due to us tippy tapping around the back needlessly at crucial times. I enjoy a win as much as anyone but definately not getting carried away.

Huh?

The whole reason many of us wanted a more direct style was to counter the high press. The reason teams were able to do it so easily because they could leave gaps they knew we couldn't punish as we would refuse to go long.

The easiest way to beat the high and energetic press is to pass quickly and directly, the opposite of how RM was wanting to play from Day 1. This direct game has come about through force, I am sure if he had his way we would still be doing the same thing.

Whether it was the stark slap in the face of the results and performances and the subsequent realisation we had to move away from it, or there was some harsh words I don't know. But the main thing is we are now playing more sensibly.

Late in the second half we went back to the tippy tappy stuff and you could see what happened instantly, but I don't mind doing it 3-0 up.

So what happens when the next team comes with a high press. Guess that's the big question.

The same as WBA the game before.

I was in the matchday thread saying we need to go direct because their press was leaving gaps in the fullback slots.

For 75 mins we were playing tippy tappy rubbish getting nowhere. He then went direct and we scored 2 goals exploiting the space that should have been exploited all game, by some simple direct passing.

2 passes from back to front for the firt goal, 3 passes from back to front for the second goal.

Its not the opponents press that makes us play tippy tappy negative defensive passes. That comes first, the press is then the tactic used to best take advantage of it.

Indeed, but if I was an opponents manager I'd employ the high press without a doubt, in the full confidence we'd cough up chances under pressure, so why didn't Coventry?

Because we were direct and we were exploiting any advances to press..

As soon as we started messing around at the back in the second half they did start pressing and we did cough up possession.

Deploying the press when we are playing a direct passing game is suicide.

What is there to deny?
Coventry played to win the game and in doing so left space to play through passes and long balls that had some intent. Most other teams keep 10 of 11 players between the ball and their goal line.
Had Coventry and WBA parked the bus we would have seen the same possession style with difficulty getting forward.
What the advocates of Cooper ball keep saying is playing out from the back is slowing us down … not so as we keep seeing long ball clearances (needed to relieve stress on the defence) simply see the ball coming straight back.
Or
Playing the ball around in defence is costing us goals … no it isn’t. The Coventry goal was fwilry typical of goals against, individual error well away from the danger area and the midfield in disarray.

The denial that when we pass the ball around aimlessly 800 times a match with 80% possession we aren't very effective.

The denial that when we abandon the 5% long balls and double/triple that and go direct, then we get the ball up the field quicker, negate their press and look more dangerous... but sacrifice possession and pass count in order to do it.

Two completely different styles, one infinitely more sensible and successful than the other. The very thing many of us were calling for from day dot.

Cooper has nothing to do with it, why are you bringing Cooper up for?

Blackpool at home, the Blackpool back four were camped on the halfway line whilst we insisited on passing it around our box....

DO you really watch the game?

Reading,s third goal against us at home came from Naughton passing the ball back in field rather than putting it into touch allowing us to rest and defend which is what would be the mormal instinct of a player, instead as this would mean surrendering possesion he made a blind pass back in side only f or the ball to be picked up by a Reading player to go on and score.

Blackpool certainly didnt park the bus ,and neither did Sheffield Utd when they played us down here....

Forest is a good example to use. They also didn't come to park the bus.

But we adopted the silly stat boosting tactics.

close to 700 passes and 75% possession. 29 long balls (TWENTY NINE). 96% short, just ludicrous.

And got pumped 4-1, and could have been 8-1.

Against Coventry we had 14% long. 54% possession and just over 500 passes.

Chalk.... meet cheese.

It also coincides with Obi having a run in the side, his pace made the goals, without it, especially the 1st , we wouldn't have scored. He gives us a different dimension and allows the midfield to lift their heads and look forward.

We played out from the back under Martinez but we didnt use 500 or so passes a game to do so

The issue is we were never mixing it up as we did under MArtinez sometimes a crossfield diagonal ball from Ash for Dyer or Rangel, Jordi Gomez would often chip a ball over the top for Scotland...Under Russell it has been mostly pass pass pass sideways and backwards.
The focus being on ball retention and possesion....
It not playing out from the back that slows us down but how we do it!
The first goal on Saturday a prime example 4 quick passes neat forward triangles...not laboured sideways and backwards passing as has been the norm

It’s what angers me,vetch, about Martin. This season should have been another where we make the playoffs .
We have enough quality and the squad is not as thin as Martin would have us believe.
In Joseph we have a quick, sizeable lad who is so keen. He has had no real chance at all to do himself justice

As I say,our expectations have been subtlety lowered over time .

Any higher would be a bonus.
Play offs would be amazing but don't think we have the settled squad yet to warrant it

The rational thinkers will be massively underwhelmed, disappointed, frustrated and let down by this term's debacle. Yearning for consistently higher standards of winning football.

What type of underachieving 'fan' aims for mid-table mediocrity, ever ? Most especially after such relatively huge investment on the back of two Playoff achievements in succession. And says it out loud on a public forum. Shameful.

You embarrass yourself with your username.
BTW - you a rational thinker ? You're joking right ?
Majority of us are realistic.
Even if Cooper had stayed, our team was ripped apart due to the numbers that left and had to be replaced.
Add to that Cooper's departure and the late appointment of Russell Martin and we were clearly on a rebuilding programme.
Plus then add the desire to change the way we had been playing under Cooper and it was clear it was going to take a lot of work to get us to a point where we could achieve a position in the play offs or automatic promotion.
You will be hard pressed to find a more optimistic fan than me, but a top half finish with a push for promotion next season will be good.
Anything better ( a tilt at the play offs ) this season would be fantastic.
I haven't said I am happy to accept sub standard performances and results, when we turn in performances like Hull, Stoke and Sheff Utd, as well as Forest home, I have been critical.
However, when we turn in results like both WBA wins, both Coventry wins, both Bristol City wins, the Blackburn, Peterborough and Cardiff wins, I am happy, although it does not mean I cannot see the room for improvement.
Perhaps go join the happy clappers at your main club, Manure ?
Oh wait, not much happy clapping there ATM is there ?

Have to be looking at play offs next season. Absolutely no reason whatsoever we shouldn’t be aiming for them.

Our squad is excellent, we will be one year in, that’s more than enough time to have developed a style of play and get players playing it.

Our squad gets ripped apart every year and we have changed our style many times, nobody has needed years and years to get it right, usually a few weeks - not even, in some cases.

It’s helped by the fact we have spent millions on replacements. Look at Obafemi and Piroe, multi million pound strikers without question, best we have ever had in this league.

Pato, Ntcham, Downes, Grimes in midfield is an embarrassment of riches to the point Ntcham has to sometimes sit on the bench.

Cabango, Naughton, Bennett, Christie in defence is again absolutely rock solid.

We have an excellent side and we really should stop undervaluing ourselves. This is a play-off squad.

We can put this season down to learning if we really must. But surely we have learned now and we need to see this carried forward from now and into next season. A poor end to this season or an average finish next season is not acceptable in my eyes.

Agree ( again ! ) and am looking for a decent return and just as important lots of good performances over the next 14 games.
A play off place is the least I am hoping for, although the teams that come down will be strong probably
