This is so important, hopefully it will give other people the confidence to come out. He’s timed it perfectly. Young so not in the first team, end of season so won’t be such a hot topic. Let’s hope any abuse will be as intolerable as racism

But you can’t go by laws of other countries as to what is acceptable in our own. If he was declaring he was gay in Saudi Arabia then yes that would be brave.

But it’s illegal and you can be executed for cheating on your partner in those countries too, leaving you religion etc etc doesn’t mean it’s that big a deal here though. Well outside of that relationship anyway.

Being gay is absolutely acceptable in the U.K. - we may look at a small isolated incidents where that hasn’t been the case but that goes for anything. People get beaten up for wearing a certain football jersey, having long hair, for the way the dress, you name it someone will have been attacked for doing something.

But societally, being homosexual has lost the stigma and is perfectly acceptable now. It’s probably more to a persons advantage than detriment in this day and age.

There’s a world of difference between the football top and being gay. You can chose not to walk in a dodgy part of Cardiff wearing a Swansea top, it’s an item of clothing. The difference is people get viciously attacked for simply being who they are, ‘looking gay’ or holding hands with your partner, or being a man wearing make up. As much as we’d like to pretend otherwise, for some people it’s still unacceptable. If it wasn’t a problem, there’d be loads of football players, rugby players, professional wrestlers, pro cyclists out.

There’s about 600-700 ish players in each league (30 man squad) probably a bit more. None of them have felt they’re able to come out. There’s a reason, they’re worried it will affect their career.

The international situation is important. What type of message is given out with the WC being given to countries like Russia and Qatar ? Money is more important.

Unfortunately people are bothered. Gay people still get beaten up for holding hands in public, my mate fostered his daughter’s friend as his family threw him out for being gay, in some countries you can be executed for being gay, the World Cup is in a country where it’s illegal, some people still kill themselves as they can’t admit it.

Can’t underestimate what an important moment this is, till we get to the stage where things like the above don’t happen, then it is still a huge news story. I wish it didn’t matter, and maybe in 10 years time, that will be the case. Certainly to each new generation it matters less and less.

In the early 70s my cousin moved from Manselton to London because of his homosexualty and the fact Swansea wasn't exactly gay friendly.

He died of AIDS aged 27.

I'll leave it there

The reporter doing the interview (on Sky) said that it had been discussed with Jake since early this year, so he's been prepared (probably in a number of ways) for yesterday's release.

However, what a mature/balanced young man, got the strength of his family and his club behind him - well done Jake

Calm down, mun!

It’s not as if he’s stayed manning the guns as the deck sank beneath the waves at Jutland. He’s said he’s a homosexual in an age where people couldn’t care less.

He's 17!
How many gay footballers in the UK have come out, how many footballers are there in the UK!?

I think the response to this young man shows that people do care.

It shouldn't be necessary or of any interest but jonalot make a good point. For many it is.
By all means don't like them (as per my parents) but try not to let it bother you -as it's facrk all to do with you what gender preference anyone else has.

Times have changed. anyones Son, Daughter, Grandchildren oils be gay. It’s how it is now.
We have to move with the times.
Some won’t. They should. It’s how it is.

Football is an environment where any difference is attacked. Because most attacks are about on field achievements which are filtered through something that can be picked out in difference.

Robbie Savage had it with his hair, Crouch had it with his height, Ozil had it with his appearance, Shelvey had it with his baldness. I think that’s also where the racism in the game stems from too, football is tribal and people pick on ‘difference’.

I’m sure there will be the odd comment but he should be no more upset about those comments than Steve Cooper is about people calling him ugly for example. It doesn’t make it any less acceptable in society and am certain nobody within his team or other teams would treat him any different.

The case study has already happened with Carl Nassib in the NFL. He’s said several times how surprised he was that nobody seemed to care. A sport that is far more masculine than football, in a country that is seen to be far more conservative.

Jake will be fine.

Fan behaviour at an NFL game is a world away from what is seen as acceptable at a football match.

Chants that are common place in grounds around the UK would see you thrown out of an NFL game instantly.

Not just in the case of racism, but in the other examples you give as well.

The reason that this is such a big story is because the way people behave at a football match is noty the same as in the rest of society.

I don’t agree.

I think there is no more chance this boy will be the victim of a physical attack than anyone else in his team. He’s more likely to be attacked for being a footballer than for being gay. I swear people are still in the 1980’s in their view of the world, being gay is not an issue in the U.K. although I’m sure people still like to claim it is.

It’s 2022.

It may not be a case of them feeling they are “able” to come out, they may not feel the need to. It’s nobody’s business who they are attracted to. I don’t think I would go out of my way to tell anyone if I was gay either, I wouldn’t see why it would concern anyone.

Behaviour at football matches in the U.K. is fine, apart from the odd isolated incident, but that’s life. I’ve had the odd idiot have a go at me too, some people are idiots - that’s just life. You move on.

I know how young he is, that’s why I was comparing him to sixteen-year-old Jack Cornwell.

I had to do a bit of running around in town this morning and probably stopped around half a dozen times to say hello to people I knew. In amongst the usual talk of how nice it is to see the weather picking up nobody mentioned ‘the news.’

This just serves to underscore what I was saying on the previous page: for most folk it doesn’t matter.

Yep, I reckon if I didn’t read it on here, I’d probably never know.

I just dislike the narrative that the West is some bigoted part of the world where nobody can mention their sexuality. It’s not at all, it’s the opposite.

I'd imagine he will do well for himself even if his football career fails.

Lets hope he doesn't go down the Gareth Thomas route of becoming a professional gay, as my gay friend says Thomas does more harm for gay people than he does good.

The NFL is in America where Christianity is more prominent than the U.K.

Homosexuality is often opposed for religious reasons. It would factually be a harder place to announce you are gay in America and the U.K.

But if he’s faced no issues at all then I highly doubt Jake will. If the worst he can expect is the odd comment from the stands then that’s no more than someone like Steve Cooper gets for being ugly.

As I said, he’ll be fine. It’s the U.K. in 2022.

The worst anti-gays of the lot are the Christians of type that rejoiced in the Covid epidemic and were against the clapping of NHS hero's perceiving it to be some form of 'false-God-worship", whilst being offended by the term "angels" because angles only belong in the bible..........Apparently!

Oh and going on about forgiveness whilst wishing hell and eternal suffering and damnation upon gays and us all.

But there again many (not all!) Presbyterians think Mormon's, Jehovah's witnesses and Baptists are heretics, Catholics sinful idolatry worshippers and civvies outside of the fold even worse than that!

So in a modern grown-up U.K that has moved away from 1970's thinking and biblical hate preachers? I think Jack Daniels sexuality will in the eyes of the vast majority of grown-up's be no problem whasever!

I once met a husband/wife Presbyterian pairing who are nothing but a pair of impostors, frauds and charlatans. Full of hate! They dislike gays!

The both of them rejoiced at what they perceived to be God's Covid punishment and were most offended by door step clapping and NHS praise. They were obviously threatened and full of resentment that their 1-2 hour of hot air offered once a week on a Sunday was meaningless, empty and pathetic by comparison!

A pair of zero end product hate peddlers that should take a leaf out of St Helens Road Methodist project that helps Swansea homeless. Or the 'Free Burma Rangers' that risk their lives serving their God in war ridden hellholes, in the meantime Mr and Mrs Presbyterian go on sunny breaks in the Mediterranean .

And an excuse they use to avoid doing Jesus type stuff is say (Google it!) "Good people don't go to heaven only forgiven people do". Nice get out clause to avoid doing what real Christians do! Utter frauds. like this multimillionaire preacher and hate peddler who rather likes what Putin is doing in Ukraine also!

I know exactly what evangelical Christians think; The Bible is taken to be THE word of God.
Ergo, homosexuality is an abomination and should be punished severely. The Bible hasnt been amended and is fundamental to Christians.
They should have the guts to admit they detest homosexuality and not hide.

You either believe the Bible as it stands or not. There is no halfway.

Very sad that.
I remember someone who attended the same school as me was part of a gang of four men who attacked a gay man in Swansea, who died from his injuries.
