| Same old England 13:31 - Nov 20 with 12989 views | trampie | How have England got such an easy draw on paper yet again in this World Cup ? Before looking at the draw I thought they won't get past both Brazil and Argentina but it looks likely that Brazil and Argentina are going to be in a different half of the draw and destined to play each other in the semis, so any potential winner from the other half won't have to play the both of them (unless one of Brazil/Argentina don't win their group and perhaps they would be not that good anyway in that scenario). Brazil might be deemed to be better overhaul than Argentina but possibly not head to head versus Argentina (didn't Argentina beat Brazil in the last Copa America ) so if Argentina get past Brazil in the semis then there is as much chance of an Argentina v England as there is of any other possible finals. Iran, USA and Wales in the group for one of the 'big teams' in the form of England means they couldn't ask for better draw than that, then the possible easiest last 16 tie for them (possibly Senegal from Africa) then a potential Quarter final against France, France seem to be on the way down they lost 2-0 to Denmark last time out, they have injuries to their top players like Benzema and Pogba then England would have on paper a possible semi final against ageing Belgium. England couldn't hand pick a better draw if they tried. | |

| Same old England on 20:47 - Dec 2 by Dr_Parnassus | I don’t see how that is accurate when all 3 opponents are ranked in the top 20 in the world - on merit. You usually need 4 points to go through on average. Qatar 3 points, then 1 points vs either Ecuador or Senegal, is infinitely more achievable than having to get 4 points from two teams in the top 20. Same can be said for Saudi and then a point from either Poland or Mexico. But remember, we are talking about England here; not Wales. As number 1 seed, having 3 teams in the top 20 is one of the toughest groups you can get, to pretend it’s an easy group is just silly. On the whole, our group was the strongest across the board. It’s just people clearly have no idea how good Iran or USA are (as proven by the comments here before each game) and stuck in their dated thoughts of what countries are strong. Just go through those pots. Which teams in pot 2 would you have rathered than the USA? Which teams in pot 3 would you have rathered than Iran? Qatars group is skewed due to their involvement. It’s effectively a pot 2, pot 3 and two pot 4 teams. England couldn’t have been in that group as they are the same seed as Qatar. FIFA rankings are notoriously inaccurate. Neither team plays competitive matches against European or South American teams, yet both are ranked ahead of teams like Serbia, Poland and Ukraine. I very much doubt Belgium or Germany would be out had they been the respective pot 1 and 2 seeds in our group. | | | |

Fact! Right up there with your same old xenophobic tripe. Remind me again who Belgium and Germany are playing this weekend. And apart from Qatar, Wales were the worst performing Nation in the competition

The bloke is an idiot. With the exception of De Brynne & Courtious I’d be surprised if any other Belgium player got into the England squad never mind they’re starting 11. Germany probably Neuer Rudiger Gundolan

The point being, USA are not as good as Germany, or many of the other pot 2 teams. Iran are certainly among the weakest of the pot 3 teams. It was a favourable group for both Wales and England. It’s a travesty that we got there for the first time in most of our lifetimes, got a group we had a reasonable chance of second in, then were inept for two and a half games

I agree that Wales were uncompetitive and poor. Age has caught up with our best players. Our younger players are simply not as good. I think Ampadu and Rodon did well. Likewise Neco. I have no idea what Wilson contributed. Our team shape and selections were poor.

Wales . OST have an element of jeopardy . Against England ,there was none. Little for Iran and USA England were very gentle on us Singing anthem was overtaken in word profile by an abject gutless clueless team

Well i am always fair as you know. Getting to the semi-final of a modern tournament will be a far greater achievement than winning the 1966 world cup in your back yard, when only about 6 other nations played the game. We all should certainly recognise that if it happens.

Roberto also a better manager than boring old Southgate, thats another fact. GK: Thibaut Courtois (Real Madrid) GK: Simon Mignolet (Club Brugge) GK Koen Casteels (VfL Wolfsburg) DF: Jan Vertonghen (Anderlecht DF: Toby Alderweireld (Royal Antwerp) DF: Wout Faes (Leicester) DF: Arthur Theate (Rennes) DF: Zeno Debast (Anderlecht) DF: Thomas Meunier (Borussia Dortmund) DF: Timothy Castagne (Leicester) MF: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) MF: Youri Tielemans (Leicester) MF: Amadou Onana (Everton) MF: Axel Witsel (Atletico Madrid) MF: Hans Vanaken (Club Brugge) MF: Leander Dendoncker (Aston Villa) MF: Yannick Carrasco (Atletico Madrid) MF: Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Dortmund) FW: Eden Hazard (Real Madrid) FW: Charles De Ketelaere (AC Milan) FW: Leandro Trossard (Brighton) FW: Dries Mertens (Galatasaray) FW: Jeremy Doku (Rennes) FW: Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan) FW: Michy Batshuayi (Fenerbahce) FW: Lois Openda (Lens) Hazard, Lukaku, Batshuayi, Tielemens, plus Jan and Toby would all be in and around the England squad. Almost certainly more than that.

Didn't England reach the semi final of the last World Cup, and final of the last Euro. You wouldn't know fair if it bit you on the Arris. And as for regurgitating that same crap about 6 nations shows what a churlish pathetic creature you are

The team selection for USA was naive. A team full of athletes who play at a high tempo but aren’t particularly physical and he leaves Moore on the bench. If we’d bullied them like we did in the second half, we probably would have won. A lot less pressure going into the Iran game then. As it was, we were lucky our World Cup wasn’t over by half time.

Was saying exactly the same thing to my father in law this afternoon. I'm not annoyed that we went home after the group stages just disappointed. Page for me showed that he is not upto the job and I suspect that his decision to play both ramsey and bale from the start of both the USA and Iran games will gives him nightmares for years to come.

Wrong. They wouldn’t . It’s your opinion and it has no justification. We didn’t qualify with far greater quality players as they bottled it. We bottled it this time too

Wales played Serbia. Robson Kanu let his career fade badly after 2016 and was still celebrating with no club and could not be picked. Wales were 1-1 i think v Serbia at Cardiff. Taylor sent Tadic to the dentists after a high kick. Some threats were made about the return. Bale went through on goal and hit the post. Mitrovic then out muscled Chester on the 6 yard line and that was that. Wales also failed to beat a weak RoI in Dublin and Taylor got sent off clocking the veteran Everton fullback and was ineligible for the return in Serbia coincidentally. Page is lucky this world cup has 32 teams. It was harder for Coleman with no play off option. Coming second meant bye bye.

We were inept I agree, but to say it’s a favourable group is factually incorrect for the reasons already stated. It’s easier to get 4 points against the likes of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Costa Rica, Ecuador etc than get 4 points against three teams in the top 20. So while it’s frustrating we didn’t play well and there were certainly some fundamental errors in team selection, we were never likely to qualify from such a group where every team is strong with no team to pick up an “easy” three points from. Sadly in a group like ours, we were the whipping boys.

In an old school group of death Wales should never have been so poor. Those players will look back on those games and regret it to their dying day.
