A case for the defence, M'Lud.

7 Blocked shots
4 Corners cleared
423 Long Throws cleared
No goal conceded from set-pieces

I thought we looked far more aggressive back there today.

Easy to forget that defence has only been together for a matter of weeks. Already looks starting to look more solid than last season and will get better as they get used to each other more.

Never knowingly understood

Is have Dickie as our MOM today, thought he was excellent and a proper centre back performance against a long ball team and a handful in their big centre forward: won everything, no ricks, made a few forays forward.

Barbet had a bit of a shocker with the ball but redeemed it all with the cross at the end so fair enough. He seems to overhit every diagonal at the moment, needs to go one club less.

You're making this up. No way did we clear as many as 4 corners.

Agree. Dickie looked very good.

Defence certainly looked tighter and more confident today. I think this was helped by Dieng coming to catch or punch crosses. He was very impressive and good to also see him make clearances with both his left and right foot.

Both feet?

Hadn't noticed that one Top Cat. Good spot.

@ Brian, the defense did look better today but we've got a couple of sternish fixtures coming up against better opposition than we've faced so far, not trying to put a damper on things but I kind of draw my conclusions after say 8-10 games.

In addition for way too long our defense have been giving me nightmares for an awful long time. (hand over eyes sort of thing).

Robert Dickie though is going to be a very-very good astute signing.

Agree completely, Ted. Sterner challenges ahead.

I wonder how much of it was down to not having to worry about the keeper behind them. I know for sure I feel a lot calmer when the ball comes into our box now with Dieng back there.

True enough - although apart from the 'few forays forward', I think Leistner had a similar game v Millwall last season. I'm sure he will be a good signing, but too early to call yet. Warburton must be happy enough though - Masterson not even on the bench

As Ted says, we need to see them against better attacks, but we've all been crying out for an improvement and I'd say with Dieng in goal, Dickie, Kakay looking excellent, all of those are steps up from last year.

Also, much as I like Manning, replacing him with Wallace is a defensive move.

Seems harsh to say it after this game, but I suspect that Masterson in for Barbet would strengthen it further.

Only 4 teams have scored more goals than us, but only 4 teams have conceded more, which proves we're looking similar in that respect to last season at the moment.

I think the defence did well yesterday looking back at it. Yesterday was a terrible game, but with hindsight the conditions were bad and Wednesday were a pretty basic physical team lumping it in, and the defence stood up to it well in general. Wouldn't want to pay money to watch football like that too often though. We have generally been a decent team to watch, but for Wednesday to end up like that, blimey

We haven't been linked with any centre backs recently by any of the click bait. I find this a little surprising. I think we could do with an old head as back up for the two/three that we have and that MW would like to get a loan for Gubbins so he can get regular league football.

Neither Masterson or Gubbins on the bench yesterday? Both unfit? Or was the plan for Cameron, Ball, Wallace or Kakay to drop in there if necessary with Kane and Hamalainen both on the bench to come on in the full back positions?

We have replaced Hall with Dickie but haven't replaced Angell's presence in and around the team.

Don't think we will see much movement defence wise in transfers. With the 3 best players Saturday all being in the defence we may feel that with the back up available and players like Cameron and Ball able to cover we should be OK
Saturday for me showed we are really needing a midfield general type. Must have been the conditions or tactics but 1st half Wed went long ball.... 2nd half they played through Bannan and he bossed it, we do need someone of that ilk imo

Six teams have so far conceded more:
Wycombe (10)
Derby (8)
Florist (7)
Cov (7)
Knob End (6)
Dynamo Gunnersbury (6)

From what I've seen we do look more solid, even if there are sterner tests to come. Dickie has looked good in every game so far, Kakay is improving and Wallace is a far better defender than Manning. See the last ditch tackle on Windass at the end of the first half.
