That's the bit I am struggling with, I don't understand how trying to manipulate the infection rate?? I just don't.. I have read quite a lot about this, but nothing so far explains it to me, how does it work? It seems as of the announcement yesterday, they were happy to let everyone mingle as many as can be! I can't see from that way of thinking that they know wtf they are doing?
Surely the peak of infections would be way lower if they took more robust measures? |
I believe the point is that this virus is particularly infectious and so there is little chance of preventing its spread into the majority of the UK population.
Think of the recent floods. You see the river outside your house rising and you know the banks will breach. You can't stop the water getting in to your house but you put sandbags down to slow the ingress to help you deal with its effects.
This is what I think the approach is in the UK. We don't have the resources to cope with a sudden large number of cases requiring hospital treatment so we are trying to spread the number out over a longer period.
But we need to keep things in perspecrive. For greater than 99% of the population the infection will be mild and so if we can flatten the curve, the hospitals will be better able to deal with the severe cases and this should result in better outcomes for those people.

Shocking British documentary on the box last night, a bloke had his head in his hands, I mean proper head in his hands, waving is arms about in disbelief, shaking his head at the UKs plan for the Corona virus (think he was American), I think they mentioned a figure of 200,000 of us will be dead, not worldwide but UK, so shocking it was hard to take in.
Basically they seemed to be saying the UK will let everyone in the country get it, many will die but the rest will build up an immunity, the rest of the World are trying to stop their citizens from getting it, are we right to seemingly allow so many of us to die, apparently no other country is taking this approach.
I have not been following the story until yesterday, saw something along the lines of our Prime Minster talking about get ready to bury your love ones type of thing (can't be arsed to look up the direct quote) and thought to myself that it was unprecedented in the circumstances for a leader to be saying such things but thought the guys a clown and an uncaring English Tory but in light of reading the UKs approach to the virus it seems like we are going to allow yourselves to get it and no doubt that is why the Prime Minster said what he said.
It maybe that our health service is crap, our health service does not compare well with other first World countries and they might realise that we can't cope so they figure we will be better off allowing nature to take it's course and let it do it's worse.
It seemed that the Government want us to mingle and carry on but the likes of sporting bodies are stopping that by cancelling their events and now the Government have changed their position on events and seem forced into going along with what sporting bodies are doing.
The NHS person on the show talked about the challenge the NHS is about to face after years of austerity and the Government will reap what it sows.
To sum up the situation is frightening and far more serious than I initially thought and our response seems to be totally at odds with the rest of the World, we basically seem to be deliberately doing nothing (I think it's because we are not in a position to do much as our country and NHS has gone to the dogs due to successive right wing Government policies for many years via Conservative, NuLabour, Con-Libs and Cons again rule). That is my attitude as well, apart from the washing hands for other people's benefit bit and things like not going out if you have a cold, or missing work and not getting paid for a minor illnesses that would not normally put you off work, what will be will be, why should I wash my hands anymore than I normally do, if I get it so be it if others get it so be it, I'm not buying some fancy germ killing soap so other people don't get it, if they get it and die, they get it and die.
If the Government want to give me fancy soap fine if not then I will just carry on as normal. | | | |

I will try not too but Government policy and God's will will determine the outcome by the look of it, people need to chill out, some say it's very serious as my original post points out but there is not much individuals can do about it and if you can't do much about something you should not worry about it as much as possible as you have little or no control over the outcome. I like your Flood analogy, except for one thing, the Government's action (or lack of them) is much more like making very large holes in the river banks, walls and flood defences to let the flood happen quicker than normal.
