| Is the patience finally paying off!? on 23:13 - Oct 8 by Dr_Winston | What's Fisher got to take note of? Not to f*ck around with the ball unnecessarily at the back? He'd have already been well aware of that. The desperate, pathetic attempts of some sad cases to pin all blame for our previous defensive woes at the feet of the keeper rather than the manager whose orders he was obeying are bizarre. |
We had a lot to change which seems to have happened. It is not Fisher's fault that we dallied about with it at the back. He does need to learn how to be more commanding and comfortable catching crosses etc. Not putting all the blame on the young lad at all.

| Is the patience finally paying off!? on 17:02 - Oct 8 by Dr_Parnassus | Excellent result today, could have easily slipped up on that one. No signs of regressing to that awful style, this really could be the start of something. I don’t care how it’s come about whether it was a Martin realisation or a stern word from above, the important part is we are now playing a brand of football that makes sense and is effective. There can’t be anyone left who seriously suggests that we haven’t drastically changed our style is there? (and I don’t mean those who do it to troll). 49% possession today Sunderland also out passing us 478-475 10% long balls A newly promoted side having more passes and more possession than us, at home, 11v11 is not something that would exist in any realm prior to the change. So refreshing that our focus now appears to be on actually winning the game rather than that nonsense. [Post edited 8 Oct 2022 17:07]

There were slight signs of playing around at the back today. Possibly down to Naughton’s absence. But nothing like previous. Long May it continue.

Don’t mind a bit of it in the right places, but it just can’t go back to how it was. It was embarrassing.

The criticism? 100% agree he did. The football we were playing was nuts. Right now, he deserves credit. It doesn’t need to be backhanded compliments like ‘he’s doing well now, maybe someone had a word’. 4 wins from 4 games, playoff positions, 3 points off the top is all we really need to say. If he goes back to playing suicidal football and we start getting smashed by teams we should be beating again, he’ll deserve the hammering he gets.

Don’t think that’s a backhanded compliment is it? A genuine curiosity worth discussing. For someone to be so adamant on one style of play and saying he refuses to scrap it - it does seem odd that it changed seemingly overnight when the rumours/speculation regarding his tenure were becoming stronger. Not that it really matters of course, as long as we are playing this way. But the answer to who instigated the radical change will probably answer other questions like is it permanent or is it a temporary respite until we are well clear, what the end goal looks like etc etc

I’ve backed him from the outset, I started losing faith after the horrendous game v Luton I watched. But I’ve always liked his philosophy, it was obvious what he was trying to do but the theory didn’t suit our skill,at the time. He’s changed it somewhat now and it is working. Personally I think he could go down as one of the best managers we’ve ever had and needs a longer contract

If we are in the top 6 at the end of the season he will get a new contract as informed by an ex player held in very high esteem. The same person who told me he would not be sacked in his first season and very, very unlikely to be in his second. This is why I have always said he is going nowhere and we have to patient, unlike some have said he has never been in danger if losing his job and nobody has had a word. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That's the way OHL, giving him the praise he deserves without the BUT just to save face. Respect to you for that. There are a lot of people coming out and saying that they were wrong and were a bit hasty. One thing I would say, sometimes you have to hit a few bumpy roads before you get to the destination.....the worry is if you know you are going down the wrong road 😬

Opinions. As a question in isolation, it’s a fair one. Personally, I think he’s just given up on our old style. Was too belligerent in persisting with it for far too long. When nearly everything positive someone says about him comes with a caveat or a reminder about why they were criticising him before, it’s not hard to imagine them doing it through gritted teeth. I probably backed him for too long, then eventually decided I wanted him gone because I thought he’d be too stubborn to change something that was clearly failing. I’m happy I got it wrong.

Plenty of people have said they got it wrong, it's football.....fans are fickle and there are plenty of knee jerk reactions. If things are looked at sensibly and with understanding then it was clear that patience was needed in this situations......you need to look for the signs and if they are/were not there then it's time to make a call, those signs have been there even when we were sat all the way down the league. I just looked through every individual game, we have been unlucky in quite a few games and really have only played really bad in about 2 league games, all others we have been unlucky not to come away with something or even the full 3 points.

People will look at games differently depending if they are positive or negative thinking. One could also say most of the games we picked points up we could easily have got less. Very fine margins in this league.

I’d say that towards the end of August, the vast majority of us wanted him sacked. However you dress it up, he’s changed a lot of minds since then. Not to say we’re the finished article and we’ll keep winning all season. If we lose 4 on the spin, conceding goals through our own lapses, I’ll probably change my mind again.

If an individual fan is proven wrong by success then the compensation is enough to leave a warm glow I’m not ready to have adult fan with Russ however although some on here clearly are. I’m starting to doubt his hair colour now. He s a fraud

as one of Martin's biggest critics I will now also offer him praise for taking the right road and backing down from his persistence of trying to play in a way that had never been successful and was dragging us down. We have had 4 great results since the obvious change and long may it continue. it doesnt mean we have become a hoofball team just that we now ate more purposeful with the ball. Well done Russ and the team

That’s what happens though when someone has such a prolonged period of such terrible output. It’s unrealistic to expect there not to be trepidation in any praise. If Obafemi missed 20 penalties in a row, then scored his 21st - he would receive praise for putting it away but it would most certainly be praise with some sort of baggage, that’s down to him to overcome by a prolonged and sustained period of success. While Daps appears to be falling over himself on this thread to pretend that people were incorrect for being incredibly accurate regarding his performance as manager and what needed changing, the reality is that criticism was absolutely valid and warranted. As you said previously, if he ever reverts back to his Martinball ways then he will be right back in the firing line - and rightly so of course.

That is exactly correct. Benda will be told like Fisher to play it out from the back. What sets Benda apart is his realising he has to take responsibility and make decisions himself. A manager cannot make decisions on the field for the players. Bizarre indeed

Every game a team can get less. Even if they lose they could have lost by more etc etc It’s about approaching it correctly and giving yourself the best chance of winning. He wasn’t doing that, he was setting us up to boost our stat sheet. To come from the field and use the “we dominated” tag line despite it rarely being true. That is why he has never had a good season as a manager despite it now being his 4th and all at clubs who should be competing at the top end of their respective leagues. It was outlined very why his methods aren’t working (and why they wouldn’t work) - all the changes needed to be put in place were also explained in great detail. This was often rubbished by the Martin fanatics who insisted that the style of play would work if we gave it time, despite being given all the reasons and explanations why it wouldn’t. Now those exact changes have been enacted and it’s had the result it’s had, I think it’s been a wake up call to those people. Some even refused to accept anything had changed until they realised that literally nobody would buy such a notion. Hopefully we can accept that those who called out the changes were spot on to do so now and were not deserving of some of the awful comments aimed at them, so we don’t get the same old nonsense after every win of pretending people were wrong to point out our very obvious failings.

We have nothing to fear from anyone in this league .It is mediocre. We really can get back to where we should be,ie the Prem. And we should be because we have proved we belong there as much as the likes of Brighton,Bournemouth,Watford… Have ambition and go for it.

The criticism was absolutely warranted. The style we were playing was ridiculous. We’re not playing like that anymore, we’re a different team. There has been a line drawn in the sand. If we were playing exactly the same way and had fluked a couple of wins, I’d agree with your Obafemi analogy.

Benda is playing under different instructions to Fisher. He’s a better keeper in almost every aspect, but he isn’t up to much with the ball at his feet. It’s not just him who clears it either. Our defenders are lumping it when they have to now, the same players that wouldn’t have 6 weeks ago. If we were still playing that way, Fisher would still be first choice.

But this is why it’s interesting to know the motivation behind the change. Is this what he believes is the right way now, or is it temporary because he’s been told to improve results? We have seen false dawns before when we have played like this for 3 or 4 games only to revert back to out and out Martinball. So I think it’s unrealistic for people to forget that the last 12 months happened and have a completely clean slate - trust needs to be rebuilt that this is the way we are going to be approaching games now. There isn’t a definitive line in the sand, it’s all been very quiet in terms of the change. Nobody has addressed it as far as I’m aware, have they? For 12 months we have heard the same mantra about the old ways, but the new ways have been met with comparative silence. It’s rather strange really and there is nobody on here who can say with any certainty that this is now the way we will set up for the rest of the season.

Well nobody knows if we’ll keep playing like this. Nobody really foresaw the change in ideology 6 weeks ago. I’d guess most of us hope we do. I’m more than happy to ignore the last 12 months. The important thing is, he seems to have found an effective way of playing early enough in the season that we’ve worked our way to three points off the top. If we do revert to 75% possession and kamikaze defending, it will be beyond idiotic and he’ll deserve all the abuse he gets. It would be worse now he’s found something that works.
