| Is the patience finally paying off!? on 11:18 - Oct 6 by guthrieintherain | Not really last minute last night played 22 minutes added time we scored in the 8th minute of added. Makes up for Millwall Stoke and Sheff Utd though them 3 were gut wrenching. We had 4 yellow cards after the winning goal which shows how much togetherness there is in our side. We are in with a shout for promotion if we can keep this going well done to the whole club and the fantastic travelling support. [Post edited 6 Oct 2022 11:25]

Agree after we scored there was a lot of work still to be done. Good to see us running the clock down in their half as much as possible rather than trying to go for goal and losing it. The club and supporters were brilliant last night

That’s a fair point. I’m wrongly looking at 90+8 rather than the fact it was the equivalent of 85+injury time. Point remains that although we’re playing more pragmatic football, last night, West Brom and Blackpool were just as competitive as the games you mentioned. It was really going against us early in the season. We’ve had our share of luck recently.

It’s not luck. Most of those goals we conceded were of our own making by playing stupid football. I’ve been consistent in saying that generally under Martin teams have found it difficult to create chances of their own against us. It’s been very rare a team comes up with a good move that carves us open. Our defending in most situations is very good. Most goals we have conceded have been a direct result of faffing around and giving the ball away in stupid areas leaving teams to run two on one unchallenged at our keeper. In the last year and a half we must also hold the record for most goals conceded from own goal kicks. Cut out the stupid stuff and we’ll be challenging. Which is apart from the odd blip what we have done recently.

We certainly defend well, we always have to be fair. I agree, our problems usually stem from overplaying it at the back and getting sloppy. We’ve stopped the Fisher 1-2 around the striker and a lot of the unnecessary, intricate passing around our own area. Those problems haven’t really been eradicated mind. Two of the three goals we’ve conceded this week have come from Naughton howlers and he’s got a goal line clearance from Wood to thank for it not being three from four. Most of the goals we are conceding are still of our own making, we just aren’t being so kamikaze about it.

| Is the patience finally paying off!? on 08:04 - Oct 6 by Dr_Winston | There is still lots of room for improvement. The team lacks pace. As much as Sorinola has rammed some of the kneejerk nonsense spouted about him earlier in the season back down people's throats by proving that he is at least competent at this level, he's still someone that can be improved upon for me. Oko-Flex is probably wondering why he bothered coming here. Same with Finn Stevens. I love Naughts to bits but he's clearly struggling at the moment. We've got a Million Pound centre half sitting on the bench who should easily be able to slot in instead, yet isn't. The question must be asked why. The return of Joe Allen will also pose some quandaries. Grimes is playing better, Fulton is doing well. Do we slot JA in alongside those or will he replace Fulton (let's be honest, it won't be Grimes who makes way no matter what). Ntcham last night demonstrated why he should always play more centrally. The midfield mix is crucial. |
Good comment, I would add that Finn Stevens could slot in as right back in a back four, which we don’t play, and Oko-Flex as an attacking midfielder/winger but not a wing back. The only width we have are with the wing backs and although Manning is doing well we don’t have a threat, or pace, on the right.

| Is the patience finally paying off!? on 07:18 - Oct 6 by Dr_Winston | That's not to say that Martinball has been jettisoned entirely either. We're still heavily possession based in comparison to the more defensive and direct style we played under Cooper. He's just tweaked things to try and avoid some of the more suicidally stupid aspects, which is what you would want to see from a manager. |
And a good one at that. | |

I agree with that. Far too many basic errors to call him a good manager in my opinion. The fact he corrects them long after he should is of little comfort, he shouldn’t be making those errors at all. These are observations made by Joe Bloggs in the stands or at home, and should be seen by a professional manager far quicker than he has done. The last 6 games he has approached it well, but that doesn’t really excuse the 60 before them (or whatever the number is). He has to prove he isn’t going to go all Martinball on us again, as we have seen flashes of common sense only to go back to square one again. To be fair to him, this time it finally feels like he understands his ways were not working, so hopefully we don’t see it return (other than against relegation fodder at home, it does okay against them). He has potential to be an adequate manager, but he doesn’t convince me that he understands the game well enough, as I don’t see how any aspiring top manager can make the errors in judgement he has and more crucially perhaps - be so slow and stubborn with realising they were deeply flawed and correcting them. He is yet again - for the 4th season running - got an excellent side to manage. He is yet to deliver anything other than severe underperformance. He needs to change that, and for that he needs consistency in thought.

Surely the catalyst for this change is Benda Here is a keeper with real guts, and the will to exercise control in his box. He will also balloon the ball out of danger if he sees fit. I love the guy. We have good players

Well, no. As much as you might want to pin the blame for all our ills on Fisher (or Naughton, or whoever is in your crosshairs at any given moment), there has clearly been a shift of emphasis in our play at the back. Benda has to a degree been a beneficiary of this rather than a catalyst. Better at certain things than Fisher of course, but not a miracle worker.

It’s a basic response from me. I genuinely believe Benda’s save last night and the penalty save have earned us those six points on our travels this week. However, last night was a more complete team performance despite the odd error which we got away with.

| Is the patience finally paying off!? on 19:06 - Oct 6 with 786 views | Treforys_Jack | Benda is a far better all round keeper. Makes RM's insistence on Fisher so much more idiotic. Someone on here was singing Bendas praises from a long time ago, (think it was dwight), I genuinely believe we'll struggle to keep him in a season or 2 especially if we don't go up. The same belief I had regarding Flynn Downes last season. | | | |

He's obviously letting Benda play his game more, he's a more traditional keeper. He cannot play out from the back comfortably and when instructed to do so he has made mistakes. Easing off on the insistence to play out from him every time has allowed us to get the best out of him, a fantastic goalkeeper, great in the air claiming crosses and a top tier shot stopper.

Generally better team performances, on top of Benda's saves you had Woods goal stopping clearance. Manning putting a great cross which Cabango, who tends to lose his player and muscle his way onto a ball in the box, all he needed to do, was guide it in, given the pace on the ball. Cabango has in the past been quite effective in the opposition box just needs a ball with pace to guide instead of lofted balls were he is going to struggle to get power on it. Set piece coach? Hope the form continues but we know in the championship that isn't always the case.
