What, to people who are earning in excess of 50k?

They already have mate their customers in particular. Rail staff coming into contact with the public are getting quite a bit of stick.

This is the problem. The main focus on strikes at the moment are the RMT and NHS staff. Both of whom at a general level already earn considerably more than a lot of other "working class" people. As much as they try to frame it as a battle against the bosses, a lot of people will see it as already decently rewarded people demanding more.

| RMT Strikes on 22:39 - Dec 22 with 2092 views | Fireboy2 | The average wage of railway worker on strike with RMT is 36k. Not all RMT union members are train drivers. The strike is not just about wages, it is about terms, conditions and cutbacks but that is never mentioned in mainstream media. [Post edited 22 Dec 2022 22:41]

The wages you’ve quoted aren’t those for the vast majority of railway workers who are members of the RMT, their pay is much much lower. Dependant on who you want to listen to Medan salary s anything between £44k ( ONS figure including drivers who are nearly all members of ASLEF a different union) and £31k (RMT figures including cleaners and excluding drivers). There ONS produce another figure of around £36k for railway workers excluding drivers, but it also excludes the cleaners who earn the least. I think train divers are handsomely rewarded, but I have no idea how hard their job is. I’ve never driven a train, but the salary is on a par with that of a pilot. Do both similar job and move similar numbers of people?

I agree with almost everything you post on here. But do you honestly belive 36k a year is a poor wage. I wish I could have achieved that in my working life, and I have been retired only 5 years

Average wage rayns. Train driving is a dangerous job, they get paid accordingly for it. As I've said before the RMT members are on strike not only for better pay but for better conditions and more importantly no cuts, it's the same reason for most people who are on strike, no more cuts, especially in the public sector because cuts to public sector means the public do not get they pay for and deserve.

If you would like to compare a train driver with a airline pilot this may help. Personally I think there is a big difference. https://nationalcareers.servic https://uk.indeed.com/career-a
| RMT Strikes on 06:31 - Dec 23 with 2037 views | 1983 | I wish people would stop banging on about train drivers it's not about train drivers and yes train drivers are massively over paid but that is down to privatisation and companies pinching drivers off each other because it takes so long and costs so much to train them. This is about the rest of us who are at the bottom of the pile.My basic wage is 21k not 30,40,50,60k and there are more on a lot less, that pays for me to live on anything else car braking down,holidays,football....etc that comes out of my overtime money which is what the railway has always done but they want to rape us of that. If they do win nobody will do any overtime for a flat rate and you will have more delays and cancellations than ever. I promise you it will get a lot worse before it gets better | |

I know its not but why focus on those who by in large have wages above the minimum wage , everyone was get on average are much lower wages no comparison I've not quoted form the media but verifiable sources . The RMT have stated that this distribution is about public safety and not pay not being the main driver which is admirably but everyone seems to have forgotten that and focusing purely on the money .

Dangerous , really ? a responsible job yes . All jobs have their risks attached but a good employer should eliminate those a with myriad of control measure including technology which the rail network has many. I can think of may other careers which I'd consider dangerous , a train driver wouldn't be one of them , imo

Thats why i thought the point made in earlier my earlier post was relevant. Give all low paid workers a 20% pay rise which in your case is 4k and everyone over say 35k just gets the 4k or whatever the lowest paid percentage equates too.

It’s not as dangerous potentially as a firefighter for sure who get less than train drivers ,which to me is crazy. Eddie should be earning what train drivers do and they what he gets. My brother in law was a signalman and the open abuse of shift allowance and overtime was remarkable . He has free train journeys for life as does his wife . Not bad really . I’m afraid this is another opportunity to bash Tories . It is food and drink to powerful union officials Border Force striking over unsociable hours when Police officers work anti social killing shifts with no allowances .

Maybe if the Police hadn't supported the Tories back when they were Maggie's private army, they may be getting the pay they deserve. How any decent person can support Tories is beyond me. As for the railways and overtime, we all know of the odd occasion when workers take the mickey in all industries. Don't tar them all with the same brush

WTF are you babbling on about , again , I'm simply pointing out the fact that train drivers are amply awarded to do a job , one of which doesn't need many formal qualifications to become one . in fact it takes less time to train to operate a train than to work as a linesman on the electricity network. Turning working man against another , you're having laugh , ask ex Welsh colliers how they view Nottingham miners .

It's not just about train drivers, it's about the majority of low paid workers. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to be a train driver, but you need to be the right kind of personality and it's very responsible.

I’m not sure what you do in the rail service maybe a job that should pay 21k? I presume you have the possibility to progress or of course you could also look for a better paid job. Some people get paid 21k with no option of overtime.

Well I never knew that , thanks . Most jobs come with. level of responsibility some better paid than others , This below taken from https://www.railforums.co.uk/t "Compare it to the ticket office or information counter, and overwhelmingly the answer is yes, £50K approx per year and your personal space is your own instead of being at the capricious whims of joe public wherever your mood or headspace is at for a lot less money. Add to that job security and strong unionisation as well as the fact that the notion that Drivers are 'special' is still residual in the industry and it's a very good gig indeed, especially when it's not essential to be a graduate either." Everyone wants more money , it's just some need more money , a subtle but important difference
