| RMT Strikes on 15:54 - Dec 23 by Boundy | Well I never knew that , thanks . Most jobs come with. level of responsibility some better paid than others , This below taken from https://www.railforums.co.uk/t "Compare it to the ticket office or information counter, and overwhelmingly the answer is yes, £50K approx per year and your personal space is your own instead of being at the capricious whims of joe public wherever your mood or headspace is at for a lot less money. Add to that job security and strong unionisation as well as the fact that the notion that Drivers are 'special' is still residual in the industry and it's a very good gig indeed, especially when it's not essential to be a graduate either." Everyone wants more money , it's just some need more money , a subtle but important difference |
Personal space and freedom from whims? Don't you think everything is all logged and tracked and accountable. Every move they make would be logged on the system and stored. It's not like driving a car or a taxi, they have 500 plus lives sitting behind them.I can't think of any job more responsible than that of a train driver

Do the self employed chose to be self employed do you think ? Wr dont want a race to the bottom, we want workplace legislation that protects the rights of all workers. Which is all of us and a good thing - yes ? Pensions, working hours, sick pay, health and safety, equal pay, even weekends …. All championed by organised labour, aka unions.

Absolute nonsense, drive 100 miles up a motorway in coach for example and do the same distance in a train ,regardless of how many passengers then do a risk assessment for both

I love it when people think the railway is just black & white.... A coach driver stops at a red light and doesn't move...simple yeah? A train driver comes to a red light but can go through that red light in about 12 different scenarios but each scenario will have a rule book section some 20-30 pages long and a sub section of that section...and in a split second he is expected to remember his umpteen rules & regulations. A train driver is continously assessed their whole career every 3 months or so and failure of this they are released of their duties and are told they have 3 months to find another job within the company. But do I think train drivers are over paid? 100% yes just like a lot of people

On the London underground on automatic trains they stop when the signals are red . The lines that have driver controlled trains pass signals at danger hundreds of times a year.

Hes invariable on a rail track , he's not steering , he's not sharing the same space as a motorway user which has literally thousand of others users, could be undertaking overtaking , holding a phone and texting , or LGV drivers in some instance watching video films under the influence of drugs or alcohol , or vehicles which are unroad worthy ,then there's the weather snow, ice fog rain , every thing a road user may have to contend with on that relatively short journey of a hundred miles . Train drivers are psychometric and medically tested , I've driven for over 40 years and I'm sure most drivers on here could say the same , never had a retest or medical to see whether they still capable of driving . All jobs have rules and procedures , my job as a high voltage engineer has many all designed to keep people safe , no different from any other responsible job. The risk of dying whilst on a train is 7 times less than taking a car journey because everyone else on the road is either blind drunk/drugged or driving a death trap .My dad worked on the railways as a guard ( when there were guards van at the rear ) out of Neath General for years so I'm certainly not anti railways .

You have spectacularly missed the point that a train driver can have responsibility for 500 plus lives every single shift. Everything they do is logged and stored on servers. They are very accountable and deserve their money. So do bus drivers, Hgv drivers and high voltage engineers

In the new year when it’s doctors and teachers turn, it’ll be numbers play with median and mean earnings used in the best way to discredit. Of course, both measures ignore the fact they’re graduate professions and many will have accrued huge debts to enter.

Not to forget that the self employed have to deal with market forces, if they are too expensive they lose trade, if they do poor work they can lose jobs, word of mouth can be a killer to a self employed person. How many self employed have union backing? Even saying that, I can't criticise these people for striking because wherever we look we see terms and conditions worsening, job security fading and pay falling further behind unless you are management, at least middle management and upwards. The tories have long been a busted fliush but I had no faith in Labour either, it is time they had a go though. Starmer and co need to step upand do something to help the people. We need a GE to rid ouselves of these pestilent tories.
