| England Thread 🏴 on 11:28 - Jul 19 with 3075 views | bosh67 | Looking back on that match last night it was such a good advert for the beautiful, mad and exciting game. Yes, it was sort of an exhibition game with the shackles off but there was so much skill on display from both teams (even though France basically only turned up for the second half). Very well reffed (barely noticed him) and with two teams not rolling about on the floor and if they did hit the deck they picked each other up. It was (apart from conceding goals in a way that made me think, have France given us a head start?) a really skilful, open, attacking, end to end game, with no dark arts, no stupidity, just two teams showcasing why we love this ridiculous game. Even afterwards, when some of the French and English players got into a huddle for a post game prayer, there was a genuine sense that these two teams wanted to play the game in the right way, with respect and talent. I doubt the final will be as entertaining and I very much hope that Spain edge it 10 or 11-0! [Post edited 19 Jul 11:28]

Some of the football was breath taking. Of course with pressure off players were able to just attack and not worry too much, could just as easily been 6-4 to France in the end Eze did very well Overall bar that mad 15 minutes v Argentina it's been a really good World Cup for England, 3rd place with regret is stil an excelent achievement. This team are so close to doing something special, it might never happen but feel very proud of their efforts this summer.

England and France had both already been eliminated from the competition, why should a glorified exhibition match count when neither team gave a toss about the game?

It wasn’t a mad 15 minutes it was a cowardly retreat into our own 18 yard box for at least 25 minutes, this bloke is paid 8 million a year to serve up that Yesterday was a nothing game and he plays Saka for 90 minutes and not even a sniff on Wednesday The worse thing we could of done was stick 6 past them as it gives tuchel another tournament Bar a 2nd half against Croatia and the first half hour against Mexico it’s been the same dross Yet again we end up on the right side of the draw and come away empty handed when it was in our grasp
| And Bowles is onside, Swinburne has come rushing out of his goal , what can Bowles do here , onto the left foot no, on to the right foot
That’s there that’s two, and that’s Bowles

I didn't really want to rant about it again so went with a mad 15 minutes, I don't disagree it's on Tuchel. I think he'll get the Nations League and if that goes badly he'll probably go next summer. There is no wrong side of the draw though when you are seeded really. France had Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco, Spain had Austria, Portugal and Belgium before the semi finals. Was only Portugal as they messed their group up. Our route was hardly easy with Mexico away and then Brazil or Norway in Miami. A side like England should make the Q/F at least and then it gets more difficult and more 50/50 games.

Agreed. Just Fontaine scored four of his record thirteen goals in the 3rd place match in 1958. They only played six matches then too, whereas now its eight.

Our side of the draw was easier no question. But the travelling involved was brutal - across an entire continent and back through high altitude / time zones etc. Agree Tuchel isn't right for England though Throwing players under a bus instead of acknowledging errors will come back to haunt him . Yeah to be honest, was it a good world cup for us? Croatia had one fantastic half of football, overall a very good performance Drew with Ghana, not great. Workmanlike against Panama, fine Really struggled against DR Congo, Kane got us out of jail Mexico, good performance really up against the odds, but honestly, we should have lost that game and would have done if they hadn't decided their best route to goal for the last 20 minutes was slinging crosses into the box and trying to beat our 6ft7 defender in the air Norway was fine, but really that game was a coin flip and we just sat back and got lucky they didn't score in ET. Argentina another coin flip and then just brutal brutal decision to sit back again. Who in the squad could you actually say had a better than average world cup overall? Bellingham certainly, Kane did, although really struggled in last couple of games. Thought Djed Spence was great. Other than that I'm struggling a bit. Compare that to France who bar one game against Spain looked dominant, or Spain who really haven't looked in danger of losing a single game they've played

If coming 3rd isn't a good World Cup I'm not sure what is. First time ever in a semi final outside of Europe. Joint highest number of goals in the tournament. As ever some very good results and performances against good sides will be dismissed. The Pressure on these games is insane, I'm as annoyed as everyone about how the semi final ended but bar those last 15 mins against Argentina I think England have been excellent and it's been another summer full of making great memories. Guehi, O'Reilly, Anderson, Gordon all played well, James was good when fit as was Konsa and Stones. France and Spain have better squads than us so not sure why we have to be compared to them, what about the other 40 odd teams? We went out the same stage as France anyway so at least matched them and went on to beat them last night scoring 6 against them. France were very flat track bullies, as soon as a team attacked them and blocked the passes into Olise they went out. [Post edited 19 Jul 18:09]

That’s fair Dave. And I agree with all of it. While even so a part of me still just wishes we’d gone for it a bit more in the semis even if we’d lost.

| England Thread 🏴 on 07:27 - Jul 18 by stevec | Not an excuse, just an observation, but we played 7 games in 28 days, that’s the equivalent of our Saturday-Wednesday-saturday routine over 4 consecutive weeks. We’ve seen what we’re like over a single week! Starting to wonder if we suddenly hit a wall that just coincided with us going a goal up. Think we played the spine of our side, the engine room, in virtually every single game. It’s quite conceivable that they all crumbled at the same time. Maybe rather than aiming at top spot, in future we manage selections in the group stage from a whole squad view. Dangerous if only two from four qualify but with largely three from four, that may be the way to go. Tournament now far too many games in my view. France far and away the best side, again, their performance v Spain was inconceivable. A lot of energy expunged against teams who shouldn’t really be there. The first sixteen out were pretty awful, the eight surviving third placers, all out in the first knock out stage. From a footballing point of view only, it degrades the tournament. I agree - i feel like I spent 3 weeks watching the only 4 good teams play against endless low blocks, until the one that had the second youngest squad and played in the least energy sapping way won | | | |

been some great moments and games though, Cape Verde v Argentina was great, Paraguay beating Germany. The Mexico game, Brazil v Norway, Belgium v Senegal, Brazil v Japan and so many moments in games. On the pitch it's been a really good World Cup, am really not looking forward to the return of club football

| England Thread 🏴 on 16:46 - Jul 20 with 1186 views | Lblock | Was talking about this Saturday evening before the bronzebollox It's not a World Cup I can say I've enjoyed but I wasn't really up for it from the start. POSITIVES England did go much further than I expected. Scotland confirmed their "gashness" again. Great few evenings in the boozer during some excellent weather. A real novelty watching the Mexico game at stupid o'clock and a real gutsy performance. ArgenFIFA didn't win it and neither did France or Germany. NEGATIVES The blatant FIFA corruption and money making took even more shine off of the thing. Playing it across three land masses is a joke as you've no idea where you are on likely KO's - I'm not moaning about late / early morning one's as we need to put up with that as it should be shared around the globe. I really fear "quarters" may creep into our game to satisfy the money men with adverts. The standard of football wasn't great and there was a lot of dirge -- it's great for the Cape Verde's of this world but the game is becoming far too robotic and rigid. The game is also dissappearing up it's own hole on VAR and this is underpinning corruption and favouritism. England were pretty stodge bar Bellingham and no need to expand about Tuchel's tactics etc The coverage served up by ITV (in particular) and BBC gets worse and worse and caught up between a woke fest, down with the kids, searching for gimmicks and really just vanilla. No highlights packages on the TV a low point as well. That absolute shite pre match and at halftime last night was the cherry on a cake of poo. Shame as all that would've been washed away by an England appearance in a final, and if we'd actually won the thing then it would've been the best tournament ever in the history of mankind. #Fickle! | |

Both ITV & BBC had highlights online every day within 90 mins of the game finishing. The time difference meant doing a MOTD style show was pointless, only time they could put it on was lunchtime when most people at work I thought the coverage on both channels was pretty good, Rooney was really good on BBC, his summary of the half time show was superb The BBC Montage was superb [Post edited 20 Jul 17:24]
