Swansea City v Wayne Rooney’s Derby County : Matchday Thread 21/22 21:18 - Apr 6 with 13439 viewsNotLoyal

It’s the Wayne Rooney thread with added thread and thread. The type of thread your old granny used to use to thread your socks.

The Ref !
Tim Robinson will be the referee when Swansea City host Derby County at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday (3pm). The West Sussex official will be taking charge of a Swans game for the second time this season — having overseen the home win over Blackburn in February - and just the fourth time in total. He previously had the whistle for the away win at Reading during the 2018-19 season, and the defeat at Fulham the following campaign. Robinson will be assisted by Andrew Fox and Nigel Lugg, while Sam Allison will be the fourth official. Robinson has taken charge of 30 games in all competitions this season, dishing out 132 yellow cards 🟨 and six reds 🟥 including the one issued to Ryan Manning in that meeting with Blackburn. 132 yellows in 30 games ! Look out !

Swansea City v Derby County ‘Last chance saloon for Rooney’ ? 7th Apr 2022 11:29
Swansea City may hold the better win rate statistic than Derby County over the history of this fixture generally down to a number of wins in the sixties, but recently the swans have struggled against the rams. 0

Wayne Rooney looks ahead to Swansea City v Derby County 8th Apr 2022 10:16
Derby boss Wayne Rooney really couldn’t have done anything more to get his side in to a position where they had half a chance of staying in the championship this season. The loss of twenty one points for administration issues and financial breaches have been the catalyst for what is fast looking like relegation. 0

It was another win but it didn’t come easy after a very convincing start at the swansea.com stadium. The swans were on a high after a great week of putting plans from the training ground on to the pitch and very expertly as well. 0

My only criticism is after we went 2 up we reverted to keep ball instead of going for the jugular...but no complaints another win.

he fell for their diving and rolling around..gave us little..but we got the points

Didn't see it at the time but it was a big shout from our players for a handball before they had their penalty, penalty or not?

Seem the foul on Patterson, its a free kick and then clearly needs to be a pen.

Also, Rooney is on about a penalty, assume it was right at the end and again I didn't see it.. Penalty or not?

Either way he was awful.
I wouldn't argue with their penalty.
Should have sent their keeper off.
Plus he missed some fouls for both sides, made some strange decisions ( such as allowing us advantage, then when Christie is in a good position to cross, he pulls it back )
I didn't see the two penalty shouts so cant comment but he was poor overall

Our wonderful supporters currently have Cabango as the lowest ranked outfield player on 5.9
I can only think some people either know sod all about football or take a perverse pleasure in doing down one of our leading lights,
Two sloppy passes today but otherwise outstanding.
BEN CABANGO 8
Made a number of important clearances and was good in possession once again. Good performance from the Welshman.
WoL
Only Piroe, Christie and Fulton (marginally) marginally outscored him on the statistics based Whiscored.

I couldn't really fault any of the starting 11, although Fisher gave away a silly penalty.
As you say thought Cabango had an excellent game today.

From my vantage point, you'll not a clearer handball in the box which was a stonewall penalty to us.

Their keeper on Paterson should have been a free kick to us and a red for their keeper.

And Cabango did foul their player in the box late on. So they did deserve a pen too.

So the ref got the 3 biggest decisions of the game completely wrong. As well as a load of others too.

Do they still do reports on referee's performance?
If so, then he needs to be censured

Just off the top of my head:
- blatent deliberate handball by derby player towards the touchline near the East stand second half.
- Naughton getting brought down by the last defender on the floor who was the last man late on.
- giving them a corner late on when it was blatently obvious to everyone in the stadium that our defender had played it off their left winger to go for a goal kick.
- and for balance - blowing up for full time when I doubt 3 minutes of injury time elapsed without letting Derby take their free kick in an attacking position.

There were many others. Utterly inept refereeing.

We should have had a penalty and their keeper should have been sent off. They did, however, rally after their penalty and we were lucky at the end that the same ref didn't give them another penalty.

Didn’t see this one, away for a couple more days.

I just wanted to wake up to decent and sensible style of play markers, the result wasn’t too much of a concern for me. Passed my phone to the other half and asked her to find the data I was looking for (pass numbers, possession and long ball %).

As she told me each one my smile grew. She said “I haven’t even told you the score yet”. I replied “you don’t have to”, I knew it meant we had won.

That’s the most encouraging thing for me, that after a few wins on the bounce we still followed through with the change in style that got us here. It’s very encouraging.

I’ll see if I can get a hold of the match somewhere when I’m back.

Very unlikely I’d say. It’s a concerted style change, chalk and cheese for those that analyse the outcomes of a style and the KPI’s addressed to them.

If she had said to me “800 passes, 4% long and 78% possession” - I would have guessed we lost or drew. It’s a direct correlation to result long term and would show if you average them out and split into wins and non wins.

There was a clear instruction not to go long under any circumstance under the old style regardless of what opportunities were on. This means we were susceptible to the press, had slow build up and found creating diverse chances a very tough task.

These were the areas that many of us were desperate for us to stop doing. But it wouldn’t be a case of not listening, it’s an incredibly unnatural way of playing and would be a consequence of direct instruction. I can’t imagine he was laying into them early on telling them to go long more, it was all about possession and short passing.

Recently, just like our purple patch prior to Xmas, we are sacrificing possession, pass numbers and short ball % to actually use the ball. 55% today at home against a team below us, that would be a rarity before now, if this was October you could guarantee we would have been 70%+.

We are a play off side, make no mistake about it. Our team is excellent, quality throughout. The fact we have handcuffed ourselves chasing an unrealistic way of playing for so long is a bit of a travesty for me.

But if we genuinely have changed and we don’t revert back to 800 passes and 80% possession a game then I’ll happily ignore that fact and look forward. But we can’t return to that ludicrous way of playing, if we do then it’s not going to sit well.
